Apparatus and Facility Cleaning
- If surfaces are dirty, they should be cleaned using a detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.
- For disinfection, diluted household bleach solutions, alcohol solutions with at least 70% alcohol, and most common EPA-registered household disinfectants should be effective.
- Diluted household bleach solutions can be used if appropriate for the surface. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for application and proper ventilation. Check to ensure the product is not past its expiration date. Never mix household bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser. Unexpired household bleach will be effective against coronaviruses when properly diluted.
- Prepare a bleach solution by mixing:
- 5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) bleach per gallon of water or
- 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water
- Products with EPA-approved emerging viral pathogens claims are expected to be effective against COVID-19 based on data for harder to kill viruses. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for all cleaning and disinfection products (e.g., concentration, application method and contact time, etc.).
- For soft (porous) surfaces such as carpeted floor, rugs, and drapes, remove visible contamination if present and clean with appropriate cleaners indicated for use on these surfaces. After cleaning:
- If the items can be laundered, launder items in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions using the warmest appropriate water setting for the items and then dry items completely.

Flu activity remains widespread across Ohio and much of the U.S. Please see the attached flu report for MMWR week 11. Influenza activity is high in Montgomery County and across WCO.
Note that emergency department indicators and thermometer sales increased likely due to COVID-19. The number of hospitalizations reported for Ohio during week 11 was 579 – a 37% decrease from last week.
Nationally, flu activity remains high, but laboratory-confirmed flu activity decreased; however, ILI activity increased likely due to COVID-19.
The CDC estimates 38-54 million illnesses, 390,000-710,000 flu hospitalizations, 23,000-59,000 total flu deaths, and confirms 149 pediatric deaths so far this flu season.
uploads\2020\03\MMWR-Week-11-3.8-3.14As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, our top priority remains being a safe environment to protect all providers, so we can continue providing high-quality care to our patients. The health of our providers contributes to the safety of our environment. Effective today, March 20, we are screening all employees, EMS providers, and visitors as they enter our facilities. This decision supports the governor’s recent request and CDC recommendations regarding screenings.
Screening will consist of three questions and a temperature.
The questions are:
- Do you have a new cough or a change in a chronic cough?
- Do you have difficulty breathing/shortness of breath?
- If you were ill, have you been fever and symptom free for 24 hours, without the use of fever reducing or other symptom-altering medicines (e.g., cough suppressants)?
Do not hesitate to reach out to your EMS coordinator for any questions.
