COVID Vaccine Town Hall

Paramedics and EMTs across the country have contracted COVID-19, and too many have succumbed to the Virus.  NAEMT has assembled some of our nation’s most notable EMS physician leaders for a virtual town hall to answer your questions and concerns regarding the COVID vaccines.  The discussion was led primarily by questions EMS asked.

Just in Time Standing Order (JITSO) for Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine

Attached is the Greater Miami Valley EMS Council Just in Time Standing Order (JITSO) for Paramedics and Advanced EMTs for Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine.  Since this is an IM injection, scope of practice precludes use by EMTs or EMRs.

Region 3 Regional Physicians Advisory Board (RPAB) approved use of EUA Fact Sheet materials for the JITSO.  The JITSO is a checklist, derived from the Moderna EUA Fact Sheet for Providers. Dr. Marriott has approved this JITSO.  There are two Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) Fact Sheets for each vaccine:  one for providers, and one that every vaccine recipient receives.  Both are attached for your information.

Please confirm approval of JITSO use with your Medical Director.  At this time, we have been told you do not need to add Moderna vaccine to your EMS Drug License.  If that changes, we will let you know.

Additional information:

  • Local Health Departments (LHDs) throughout our region are receiving Moderna vaccine this week.  Some of that is earmarked for EMS.
  • In addition to providing vaccine to EMS personnel, most if not all LHDs will look to you for assistance at every Point of Dispensing (POD) for COVID vaccines.  Make sure your personnel have completed the online training and reviewed the JITSO and the EMS Standing Order for Anaphylaxis
  • This JITSO is specific to Moderna vaccine.  At this point in Ohio, Pfizer COVID vaccine is largely being administered to specific populations by two large pharmacy chains.  As more of the Pfizer vaccine becomes available, we will issue an additional JITSO.
